Former hospital land will support future healthcare in Littlehampton
The NHS has confirmed that 100 per cent of the net proceeds from the proposed sale of the surplus land at the former Littlehampton Hospital site will be reinvested in the local NHS estate, with a commitment to support investment in Littlehampton Health Centre.
The land on Fitzalan Road has been vacant since the former hospital closed in 2003.
NHS Property Services began formally considering a sale in 2024, following engagement with local NHS organisations about whether the site could be used to meet a clinical or estates need. No NHS provider was identified with both a clinical requirement for the site and the capital needed to develop it.
NHS Property Services listed the site earlier this summer and is currently in early-stage discussions with an interested party. The final value of the sale will not be known until a sale is completed.
NHS Surrey and Sussex and NHS Property Services recognise the strong local interest in the future of the site and in healthcare provision for the people of Littlehampton.
As a result, we can confirm that, if the sale of the surplus land is completed, 100 per cent of the proceeds will be reinvested in the local NHS estate, with a focus on investment in Littlehampton Health Centre.
This will help further local plans in line with the NHS’s neighbourhood health ambitions. A neighbourhood health team has been established with priorities on improving access, mental health support, and prevention.
The ICB is keen to share information about this work and is planning activity over the autumn to provide more details on the work that is underway in the town. This includes the opening of a new dental practice next month.
NHS Surrey and Sussex and NHS Property Services are also committed to ensuring that the community is kept informed on the sale of the land as the process progresses.
A spokesperson for NHS Surrey and Sussex said:
“We understand how important it is to local people that the value of this land benefits healthcare in Littlehampton.
“We can confirm that 100 per cent of the net proceeds from any completed sale will be retained for investment in the local NHS Property Services estate, with a commitment to support investment in Littlehampton Health Centre in line with local health priorities.
“Together with NHS Property Services, we will provide clear updates to the community as the discussions progress and as plans for reinvestment are developed.”
