NHS urges people to prepare their medicines cabinet for winter
As the NHS prepares for winter, people across Surrey and Sussex are being encouraged to check their medicines, plan ahead for repeat prescriptions and report any suspected side effects as part of this year’s MedSafetyWeek campaign.
The eleventh annual #MedSafetyWeek runs from 2 to 8 November 2026, with the theme ‘Side effects - don’t ignore them, report them’. The campaign highlights the importance of reporting suspected side effects and other problems with medicines and medical devices through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
Anyone can report a suspected problem, helping the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) identify potential safety concerns and take action where needed.
With winter traditionally bringing increased demand for NHS services, taking simple steps to prepare at home can help people manage minor illnesses and look after their health. NHS Surrey and Sussex Integrated Care Board is encouraging people to keep essential medicines in stock, order repeat prescriptions in good time and check that medicines are stored safely.
Linda Honey, Chief Pharmacist at NHS Surrey and Sussex Integrated Care Board, said:
Preparing your medicines cabinet is a simple way to get ready for winter. Make sure you have the medicines you regularly need, order repeat prescriptions in good time and check that any medicines you keep at home are in date.
Keep medicines in their original packaging, in a cool, dry place away from children and pets, and check whether any need to be stored in the fridge. Medicines needed in an emergency, such as reliever inhalers, GTN sprays and adrenaline pens, should be easy to access while being stored safely.
If you experience a suspected side effect or have concerns about a medicine, speak to a healthcare professional. You can also report suspected side effects through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. Reporting problems helps improve the safety of medicines for everyone.
People can also speak to their community pharmacist for advice on medicines and many common winter illnesses. Seeking advice early can help people find the right support and avoid problems becoming more serious.
