Plan ahead this Bank Holiday weekend

As the August Bank Holiday weekend approaches, NHS Surrey and Sussex is encouraging residents and visitors to enjoy the long weekend safely, plan ahead for their healthcare needs, and use NHS services wisely.

The bank holiday often sees families and friends making the most of the final weeks of summer, whether that's attending local events, spending time outdoors, travelling, or enjoying a short break. Taking a few simple steps can help ensure the weekend stays enjoyable and stress-free.

Those taking prescription medicines are encouraged to check they have enough to last over the bank holiday period and order any repeat prescriptions in good time.

NHS Surrey and Sussex is also asking people to choose the right service if they do find they need medical help over the weekend, helping to keep emergency care available for those who need it most.

For urgent health concerns that are not life-threatening, NHS 111 is available online and by phone to provide advice and direct people to the most appropriate service.

A range of urgent treatment centres, minor injury units and walk-in centres are available across Surrey and Sussex to treat cuts and grazes, minor burns, sprains, strains, bites and stings, with most open on bank holidays. These urgent care services provide expert treatment closer to home and often with much shorter waiting times than hospital emergency departments.

Community pharmacies remain a convenient first port of call for advice and treatment for many common health concerns. Pharmacists can provide expert advice and, through the Pharmacy First service, can assess and treat a number of common conditions without the need for a GP appointment.
